What are Italian Pizzelle Cookies?

From Italy, Italian pizzelle cookies are thin, crisp, sweet, and waffle-like treats. These pizzelle cookies are typically made with a batter of flour, eggs, sugar, and butter, often flavored with anise or vanilla. Then, the batter is poured onto a special pizzelle iron that imprints a decorative snowflake pattern on the cookies as they cook.

Can Dogs Eat Italian Pizzelle Cookies?

It’s not recommended to share Italian pizzelle cookies with dogs since the licorice-like taste, derived from an ingredient called anise, along with butter and sugar, can upset their stomach.

Preparation Tips

Pizzelle Maker
It’s crucial to preheat the Pizzelle Maker and apply a minimal amount of cooking spray at the beginning and throughout cooking only when necessary (which is usually not needed). I opted to use a coconut oil spray.

Blended Apple
Dice a medium-sized apple into small pieces, then blend it in a blender with 1/4 cup of water.

Pizzelle Batter
Make sure the batter is thick enough to drip slowly from the spoon rather than running off quickly.

How Do You Store Pizzelles So They Stay Crispy?

To keep the pizzelle cookies crispy, let them cool completely before storing or stacking. It’s ideal to wrap them in aluminum foil, but you can also use containers once they’re cooled.
